Autumn ‘Earth and Space’
In Autumn term, Year 5 enjoy a science based topic of ‘Earth and Space’. In science we learn all about our solar system, the moon, night and day and the seasons. We learn all about the life of Neil Armstrong and write a biography. We base some of our English work around two novels: ‘Alien Invasion’ by Guy Bass and ‘Cosmic’ by Frank Cottrell-Boyce. We also make moon buggies in DT and in art create chalk masterpieces inspired by space and artists such as Van Gogh. In geography we learn about Water and why it is so important on Earth. Our RE lessons teach us why Christians care about the environment and protecting the planet. We also learn about the planets in French and how to describe them.
We will also visit The Centre for Life in Newcastle and have a chance to go to the planetarium.
Spring Term ‘Powerful Planets – The Rainforest’
The Year 5 children explore the Rainforest within our ‘I’m a Year 5 get me out of here’ Geography themed topic. We escape to the luscious lands of the Amazon looking at a range of short stories such as Amazon Diaries, The Great Kapok Tree and the Shamen’s Apprentice. We learn all about the rainforest, the different parts, animals and the climate.
Summer Term ‘World War 2’
In summer term we step back in time to the Second World War. We learn about the war and it’s significance as a turning point in British History. We will be reading the story ‘Goodnight Mr Tom’ and learning about the diary of Anne Frank. We will learn to sing wartime songs and create Blitz pictures using a range of materials. We also visit Eden Camp Museum in North Yorkshire as our residential visit for the year.
Along the way we will work with various specialists; Shotton Hall Drama, SAFC Foundation, Durham Cricket Board and many more.
