We have some really exciting topics in Year 6 this year and some fantastic adventures planned. Children will be working hard on improving their literacy and numeracy skills in particular this year as they prepare for the SATs in May.
Autumn Term ‘Crime and Punishment’
In the Autumn Term we will be focusing on crime and punishment looking at notorious criminals in history, executions in the UK and around the world and modern day punishment. We will go local and look into Mary-Ann Cotton and her criminal mind, are any of her victims buried in South Hetton? We will also look at letters, confessions and debate in the style of a court case, guilty or innocent?
We will also be working with Andrew from Shotton Hall Academy on our singing (tra la laaaaa) and preparing for Carols by Candlelight at St. Cuthbert’s Church in Peterlee in December.
Spring Term ‘Crime and Punishment’
During the first half of the Spring Term we will continue our work on crime and punishment. After half term we will move to a focus on SAT’s skills as children prepare for their final tests.
In the Summer Term, children will begin a transition unit and take part in transition days with Easington Academy. There is also a chance that we will take the children to London as a reward for their dedication, hard work and excellent behaviour throughout the year. Children will be encouraged to take part in a savings scheme towards the trip and complete tasks at home, as well as competitions within school, to build their savings throughout the year.
We plan to book tickets for the theatre, as well as visiting the Natural History Museum. During the summer term, we will complete a final unit on the dinosaurs. We plan to explore a range of art and media activities as part of this unit and are excited to see fossils and dinosaur bones at the Natural History Museum in London. Throughout the year children will continue to take part in singing lessons with Andrew from Shotton Hall Academy, and they will take part in a large event at the academy towards the end of the year, alongside pupils from other local primary schools and pupils from Shotton Hall Academy.
